Jimmy Villegas
He approaches his paintings as portals—constructed spaces, intimate theatres that renounce formal logic. While their presentation may suggest fragments of narrative, they resist fixed meaning. Continuity is not prescribed but produced by the viewer, who, in the act of contemplation, assumes the role of the artist. The question is no longer what the artist intends to say, but what the viewer is able to see, construct, and extend.
Within his work, elements emerge that allude to reality while simultaneously evading it. It is precisely in this unstable encounter with the possible real that the image establishes its connection to the audience. Familiar forms flicker in and out of recognition, anchoring the viewer just enough before slipping into something less certain.
Desire operates here as a generative force, moving from impulse into the symbolic. The images that circulate within his paintings carry traces of the real, yet when articulated, they unfold as alternate realities—spaces that stretch and unsettle the limits of what can be known or understood.
Though rooted in a deeply personal construction—one that touches on fundamental human conflicts—the work remains open to rupture. It admits failure: dead ends that mirror the labyrinths of thought, interruptions that disrupt coherence, moments where language collapses into shadow. In these fractures, the work does not resolve, but lingers—holding the viewer in a space where meaning is neither fixed nor fully lost.
